Prism Video File Converter App Reviews
Worked great for me!
As good as it gets!.. I needed to convert an .avi file to a .mov file. Worked easily, without any issue. Great tool. Thanks.
NOT ONLY IT DOESN’T CONVERT MOST OF FILES, BUT IT CRASHES AND KNOW EVEN WORST, UNBELIEVABLE THING: THE WON’T CLOSE, IT IS OPEN BUT NOTHING APPEARS ,AND IT DOESN’T LET ME DELETE IT !
Great converter dellivers on promises
Finally, a free converter that does what it says it will do and is easy to use in an intuitive way. Thanks developers
I spent 2 hours looking for software to covert a .264 file. Not even my Adobe suite could handle the file. In desperation, I downloaded Prism Video File Converter - it was free and worth a try. Amazing! In 15 minutes I had 5 files converted and ready for my project. Thank you for a great app!
Not Stable
Was not able to convert a single file. Application would quit unexpectedly when clicking on Convert.
Crashes
Everytime I try to convert a video, the program crashes before I can start. This is useles, don’t waste your time.
Tried to convert .vob file to .mov and mp4 files == then tried quicktime (which supports those file formats) and it wouldn’t run either — Tried to preview the original file and Prism said it could not open it.. I know it is feee — but not a good intro to product. Ok… after more trials — apparently Prism cannot open/process .vob files that are less than 1 meg… Have tried up .884kb and it could not preview nor convert ..
I needed a .wmv file transferred so I eventually came across this program. It was easy to understand and of course free. Theres not a whole lot of explination in the app store of its capabilities with specific files, but I thought I would just try it out anyway, cause I could always delete it. The give away of course is in the screen shots, you can see there is an .avi file AND a .wmv. I transferred a .wmv file into an .mov and it was smooth a butter. The compression on the file may have still been high, so I used compressor to expand it into a Pro Res 422 file so that I could edit it in Final Cut Pro 7, which is still the best (Apple please pick FCP7 back up for support and updates! cause I want to edit 4k one day) Anyway, it’s a great little program so far, it made my .wmv into a .mov so Im happy.
I wanted to make an App Preview with this but it won’t create a 750x1334 mov video required by apple. I type that in, and it changes it to 750x1336 which Apple will not accept
Needed to veiw a video file someone emailed me in .wmv format that I couldn’t open on mac mini. Very simple to use, prompted me to choose file to convert and then where to save it. Very quick, took less then two minutes and I was watching my new video.
Free Version: Dropped several .mov files into Prism, files which played fine in QuickTime using FlipForMac. Prism reported “error: could not open movie” to every one. Willing to re-review if Prism tells me why and how to make it work.
AMAZING!
This does exactly what you want it todo, amazing amzing amazing!
So easy to use and it does what you want it to do without the extra fuss. So far I have not had the need to buy the IAP, but if you do a lot of video file work do yourself a favor and use this app. You will not be sorry. I use it on a fully decked out mid-2014 rMBP. It will converert eight video files simultaneously in about two minutes. And I am not talking about small files here. These were hi-def vids that I needed to convert AND compress. No glitches, no sluggishness, and no errors! And to top it off… it was whilst using battery power. So if it will do that on this computer, I am sure it will be very good on slower/older models as well. Enjoy and God bless!
WIll not convert VOB (DVD) video file
Normal DVD (VOB) files will not convert. The Prism app info says specifically it will but when I drag in or try to upload a VOB file, it is not accepted. I do get an offer to upgread for $60 but I'm not about to do that unless th app will do what it promises to do.
Prism Works
Have not had problems. I'm using with macOS Catalina
Can't add VOB files
Any method I choose to add a .VOB file doesn't work, they don't show up in the list. I don't know if other types will work, or if it has anything to do with being on an M2 processor, or if I need to "upgrade".
Files could not be added to conver mac os catalina 10.15.7
Maybe this doesn't work with Catalina any longer or something. Tried it for the first time today, it did nothing. I see a pop up blip open when I add files, but they do not actually show up in a list to convert after.
Pesky AVIs Made Real
I have a couple of years worth of AVI dash cam files that QT doesn't like. Prism has worked nicely to convert them to MP4 files. Prism allows batch processing, so I do a day at a time, taking a couple of minutes for most days. There is also the capability of adding a simple title to the output, or adjusting brightness or color. The free version has three encoders, MP4, H264 AND H.265, the last one seems most appreciated by QT. On a Studio, things seem to run pretty quickly, taking up about 30% or so of the total CPU cycles available. In any event, an admirable solution to the legacy AVI files issue and something to do to keep me off the streets wandering about.
Great App!
There were no recent reviews, and many of the old ones indicated issues that no longer seem relevant. We have a curriculum on DVD for groups and didn't want to expose the DVDs to continual wear and risk of damage. Within just a few minutes I was able to convert 32 large VOB files (each larger than 100 MB) to MP4 and copy them to flash drives. All with the free verson!
Sexiest App Ever
This app runs so smoothly. I needed to convert 3 .webm files and one .mp4 file to .mov and it allowed me to do just that in less than a minute. Well-designed and worth a download.
Didn't do anything
It didn't convert any of the MP4 files I dragged in to .mov.
Frame rate change stuck at 29FPS
Well the app is great and easy to work with, but i have different video frame rates and are mixed between MP4 and MOV and all i wanted is to change the formats but keep my original 59,94 fps and all conversions are premade to 29 fps no way around! is there an easy fix to it or is there a purshase version that allows me to custom my fps or is it just it doesn't work? please give me a n answer so i can continue using your software and keep supporting it
Paywall, plus no .wav?
No
love it!
Works great and no issues. Thank you!
Won't open .VOB files
Other converters at least convert them but with watermarks. This one did nothing, not even list it in the GUI.
Great Coverter
I really liked how quickly I was able to covert old DVDs to MP4 format. Worked flawlessly!
Won't work
I recently updated the operating system on my Macbok Air to Catalina version 10.15 and this won't work now. I hate Apple so much and will probably go back to Microsoft.
Not compatible
No longer compatible with modern versions of MacOS
Performs exactly as needed
when my Mac won’t open a video, this program makes it possible. Exactly what I need
Bit hard to navigate but not bad
It's a bit hard to navigate but overall I mean it works
Great App
I really enjoy this app, it makes converting videos super easy and quick!
Just What I needed
I needed an app that was easy to use and would compress video files. This one did exactly what I needed. Well done.
it's a great app

Fast and easy tool
This is a fast and easy tool. I use this often for work when needing to convert videos from the arts organizations we are promoting. I’m mainly using it to create MP4s, so I never have any problem with other file types. A simple tool, not too spammy, not too flashy.
Richard
I was looking for a way to convert JVC TOD. files to use in Final Cut Pro X and this program was perfect for my needs. I would recommend it to anybody needing to convert any files for video editing. Thanks, Prism.
This was hit or miss for VOB files and hijacked system to set as default video opening program.

So helpful for old family videos
This is exactly what I needed. I found a DVD of important family memories from 2006 and needed something to convert the VOB files into something usable. This worked perfectly, quickly, and painlessly.
Steals all file type associations without asking
This app will take over all associations for video file types without asking, and to change them back you’ll have to manually right click each different file type (avi, mp4, flv, etc etc) choose Get Info, select the app it’s supposed to open with like QuickTime or VLC and then click Change All. Whatever undocumented method it uses to do this, even after changing them back, all the files still show the icon from this app as a nice reminder. Apparently there was another review of someone reporting this a year ago, and the company replied that they would fix it a year ago, and they still haven’t. Too bad I didn’t see that review before installing it.
Converted a video recorded in 2001!
I wanted to share a video I made in 2001. It was in mpeg format which is too ancient for social media. This worked like a charm. Very happy. Thank you!
Worked perfectly!
Wow. Worked surprisngly well! Was converting four 1TB .VOD files. Took about 15 minutes for all four but popped them out into .mov files perfectly! I’ve never enjoyed an app enough to write a review. Dunno if they’ll ever see it but big thank you to whoever developed this! Helped me backup old DVD memories from 2005.
It is easy to use
It does what it says it will and I haven’t been harassed by ads or popups yet. by this point I WOULD support it if it did ask, and I probably will even if it doesn’t. 5 stars.
It wont even download
I downloaded it and when i try to open the application it says i have to download it and I am not out of storage so there is no reason for this to be happeing
Works well
It works well so far! I have used this to convert many slideshow files from DVD’s I had made over the years. Now I am able to save those in the mov file format for digital save. I had thought I would never be able to do that, but this app make it possible. Thanks!!!
Works really well with all kinds of formats
I spend a lot of time converting files from various formats taken from security cameras and other types of systems. This free version does all I need and does it seamlessly.
User
Had pretty low expectations for any free app and was pleasantly surprised by the Prism converter. It works exactly as it should, click, click, done. Kudos...
Workhorse
This does just what I needed it to do — translate .mod files to .mov or .Mp4 Even with the bigger files up to 5 gb, worked like a charm.
short videos only or bad FAQ and troubleshooting
Video converted just fine…26 seconds worth, of a 3:04 video. Bought the upgrade for almost $60. Still only 26 seconds. Spent a half hour trying to figure it out on the FAQ and Troubleshooting sections. Wound up purchasing iskysoft media converter instead. Worked first time…the whole video length. I am sure there is a solution, which once known is quite simple - but didn’t work for me, and I don’t recommend the app.
Saved my life & my files.
I was editing video footage for a film and could not find any other app (or software) to convert my files correctly or even as quickly as this did! Added bonus that its free and trustworthy. LOVE THIS. could not have completed my job without it.
Great video converter
Worked perfect for me for converting MP4 files.
Amazing!
I have to convert multiple formats, from security cameras. Prism may not be able to convert them all, it will convert most. Even Windows based codecs. It’s a definite goto. Many thanks...
Best at compressing video for web and mobile
For whatever reason, I always get the best quality/smallest file sizes using Prism Video. It’s great!
Was Amazing! Easy To Use!!
I really needed to convert this one video file I have so I could play it on quicktime player since I have a Mac… yeah, and I am not good with computers. However when I got this, was so easy and worked great. It was fast and I would reccomend it to anyone needing to convert a video file! Perfect!
BEWARE!
This takes over your video files so that it becomes the default app to play all video files. Uninstalled and had to go through and fix all the permissions.
Estoy encantado
Me permitio pasar unos archivos de una camara de video digital panasonic a archivos actuales sin ningun problema, y ademas gratis
4 Stars
Wish there were a few more formats I could save to (for example, WMV is in the list, but grayed out), but it works well for free!
Prism Rating
I originally thought I would have to convert a wmv file before viewing it on my MAC but all you have to do is click on it in Prism and you can watch the wmv file. It worked great. Thanks.
Great App!
This app saved me so much work! It did the job quick with just a few clicks! I LOVE IT!
Sketchy
Frustrated at the fact I needed to convert a .mpg to .mp4 in order to edit on final cut, I downloaded the 'prism file converter free’ app. The whole experience felt sketchy from the beginning. Yes in theory it converted the video file, at least it did if I was using the 'prism file converter free' app to play the video. And that’s where it all goes down hill. So here’s the flow: I download the app, open and then drag in my .mpg file. I select .mp4 from a drop down which was a long roster of file types but only a few were selectable (perhaps the pro version offered the others). After converting, I get a pop-up safari add from the developer, soliciting for other apps. I then close the pop-up and the app. I click on the newly born .mp4 file and 'prism file converter free' opens back up to play the video. The app overrode my system default for playing .mp4 files... I close the app again, and then selected “open with” to reset quicktime as my default video player for that file type. Then when I attempted to open the file there was a security pop-up informing I was attempting to open a file from an unidentified source or developer. I canceled and deleted the app and file. Of course, I didn’t bother clicking on the $49.99 ‘upgrade’ button within the app as I had no trust in what would happen.
Slow Conversion
Works well, but very slow.
good stuff
good stuff and it’s free. I had a wmv file and other windows files that I simply needed converted so I could play them in Quicktime on my MAC. This did just that! It quickly converted my file and I’m able to play it. I’m not sure about whether or whether not you’re able to edit with this app, as I only use it to convert Windows files for my MAC.
Good!
very good
It works
I have not found a file system that it can’t convert and it works fairly fast. Highly recommend!!!!!!!
